I don't care about your politics.

I have a long-standing position on politics: don’t make your politics my problem, and I won’t let mine become yours.

I am not saying that I don’t have strong political feelings because I do, but I am saying that I’m not interested in discussing that topic with anyone I wouldn’t hug. This seems to be the healthiest approach.

In the United States, we’re headed into the most brutally partisan election of my lifetime. People are at each other’s throats. And so I ask you: is that something you want to soak your brain in if you don’t have to? Of course not. You’re no fool.

When it comes to most things, I honestly don’t care if someone disagrees with me as long as they don’t make it an issue between us. I don’t cut people out of my life because of their beliefs, but I’ll do it in a heartbeat if they become a point of contention. I don’t have the energy to worry about what someone might say or to fret once they’ve said it.

There was a time when I couldn’t keep my mouth shut on political issues, and I got into many tangles because of it. I used to think that was a moral thing to do. Now I realize it’s obnoxious. No one wants to hear your take on the day’s issues, and let’s be honest: you don’t want to listen to theirs, either.
