I'm not a salesman
With luck, this blog will connect to my domain name in the next couple of weeks and function as my official website. I’m in no particular hurry to do this, as I’m not interested in the promotion side. I prefer to write than shill, as my publishers have discovered, to their dismay.
I don’t have anything against people who consider marketing as much a part of their writing life as creating, though I think they’re missing the point. People like me get into this field because we like telling stories, not because we want to stare at analytics for hours daily. Anyone can do the latter, but not everyone can do the former. Why take a step in the wrong direction?
Sure, I tried it the way some people swear is the most effective, but I was bored and frustrated before long. The mechanics of online advertising are too opaque for someone like me, and I can’t be bothered to work them out. This is one reason I prefer to work with publishers rather than on my own: they have people whose only job is stuff like that, though I often wonder if even they know what they’re doing.
It’s much the same with social media BS. You have to sell, sell, sell yourself and your work. Sorry, that’s not me. I spent my time in the sales trenches, and I’m not returning after working so hard to escape that life.
