Revisions?
One advantage of working for myself is having complete control over my writing. I can write what and how I want, which is tremendous freedom after spending fifteen years being given parameters to create. You probably wouldn’t believe how many Mexico novels I was obliged to churn out to get the three that made up the Borderland Trilogy. Ugh.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve considered revising my previously published works. And that includes novels published by imprints like Mulholland Books. I was obliged to change the Camaro novels in ways that have never sat well with me, and I wouldn’t mind the opportunity to put them back the way I originally wanted them. Similarly, I have thought about ways to retell one or two of my self-published books and desire to alter them, too.
While revising what has been done might seem like a waste of time, I see it as an opportunity to use my experience. I’ve learned a lot over the past decade and a half, and some of these stories would be better if retold. So, I suppose the question is whether I want to spend the effort to “fix” that stuff or turn my attention to new things. There’s a case to be made for each option.
I’m in no hurry to do either. I’m in the enviable position of doing what I want creatively without worrying about additional income, and the freedom that warrants me is considerable.
