This is what I wanted to write.
If you’re reading this, it’s probably because you’ve read my work and came looking: 1) for more, 2) for a way to send me a nasty email. I often hear from people who wish to praise The Borderland Trilogy, my first three traditionally published books. And while I know they mean well and probably legitimately like those books, I didn’t become a writer to write that kind of thing.
It’s no accident that the first novel I wrote for serious publication was The Guilty. This is the sort of book I wanted to write. Different. Interesting. Perhaps it conforms to the genre in some ways, but not others. And, most importantly, it’s personal.
Say what you want about the Camaro books, but they contain much of me. They speak to issues that concern me, like violence against women, and they reflect the stories I enjoy as a reader and viewer. I backed into crime writing, and while I have a modicum of talent for it, that’s not where my heart lies.
My heart is with books like The Guilty. I’d much rather be remembered as a writer who inexpertly explored different genres, mixing and matching as I wished, than one who played it safe all the time. I could have written Mexico novels forever. And I might write another one day. Who knows? In the meantime, check out my latest and see what matters to me.
