What am I working on?
There are two schools of thought when it comes to discussing upcoming work. First, there’s the idea that talking something out provides a measure of accountability. If you’ve put the project out there, people will expect it, so you’re less likely to abandon it. I adhere more to the second: talking about my progress robs me of forward momentum. After all, if I’m telling the story to people, why write it down?
As a result, I won’t share what I’m doing right now beyond final edits on some things that need to be out the door soon. I will say that if you liked Land of Fire, you’d enjoy my WIP, too. I can’t say with certainty when it’ll hit bookshelves, but I’m hoping it’ll be next year sometime. I’ve been quiet for too long, and having Far From Home and The Guilty drop quickly is a starting gun for the next phase of my career.
I’ll finish my WIP by mid-July, which leaves time to write a shorter piece before the end of 2025. That one will hopefully be done just in time for my fifty-fifth birthday and the fifteenth anniversary of The Dead Women of Juárez, my publishing debut. It’s been a hell of a run, with bestsellers, award nominations, and everything else a writer could hope for. My ambitions say it hasn’t been enough, but it has. What comes next is the icing on the cake.
